Review: Miss Universe 2020
The truth that
we are facing a pandemic, staging an international pageant is something
difficult to imagine but MUO did not fail its fans and supporters. Last May 16
in Florida, USA, the finale of Miss Universe commenced where 74 countries
participated and joined the cause of Confidently Beautiful.
This time we are
going to go deeper into details as we do a review of the most prestigious
pageant.
Let us start
with:
Production
Talking about
this aspect, the 69th edition was a downgrade and far from the 2019 stage and
2018 Thailand's X-form stage which was really extravagant at its finest. But
given the current situation, it was still a good show though, however, there
are a lot of things that can be noticed while watching it live. The camera
angle didn't justify every gown of the candidates; some candidates adjusted
their selves just to be in the frame; the exposure of every contestant is too
quick. You'll get dizzy watching it
saying, "Oh! It's done?".
On a positive
note, let's appreciate that the organization did everything just to made that
69th edition happen. I know they reduced their staff because of the strict
covid protocols and we understand that. As I said, it was still a good show.
Hosts
Mario Lopez and
Olivia Culpo were the presenters of the Miss Universe 2020. Mario is a good
host but Steve Harvey is much better than him. Olivia's hosting was too dull
and very monotonous; you'll never feel the excitement whenever she calls a
country that is opposite to what we are accustomed to since 2015. I'm still
into Steve's way of hosting 'cause this man knows how to connect to the
audience by just his humor.
Continental
Groups
I first thought
that this was not fair to girls who really have big potential to advance into
the next level of the competition ‘cause they don't have space or room just to
be in the Top 20. However, just this edition they remove the continental groups
which is good but when the coronation night came, I am extremely sad 'cause few
girls like Miss Canada, Miss Romania, Miss Nepal, Miss Singapore, and Miss
South Africa didn't make it into top 21. These ladies are top-5-material. These
mentioned ladies are qualified to be in the top 21 and a lot of pageant
enthusiast asks, "What was lacking?". To be brutally frank, based on
their performance, there are few ladies who are in the semis who I think didn't
deserve the spot. I don't wanna name names but that's what I felt. I thought
that the IMG is still looking for a spokesperson and a good model. But it turns
out that the top 5 are not that great as compared to past IMG Winners. I can
only pick 2 or 3 out of 5 honestly. The top 5 candidates didn't give strong and
impactful answers with conviction. Let's just say that it has something to do
with candidates' destiny.
Panel of Judges (All-female-judges)
Miss Universe
shows support to women empowerment. This year, it reflects to that of the
selection committee which is composed of all women in the table. The move on
getting all female judges has both pros and cons. One of the pros is that women know what
exactly to be a woman of confidence.
Another could be women are very keen observers and they know exactly
what it means to be a “ Miss” in this
field of pageantry.
However, there
is this con. One of which is that they do not celebrate diversity. The pageant could have invited men seated in
the panel. Men know also to look for beauty and substance. If we have a male
judge, the representation of the male choice can be heard.
Opening Dance
When the IMG
started running the MUO, we were taken away from a festive opening number. But
this year is a surprise, the opening dance went lively through the great dance
moves employed in the music of Pitbull. This reminds us of the opening number
MU 2010 had. For this segment, I can say that MUO really gave us a treat.
Swimsuit Round
We can say that
what made the swimsuit competition great are the girls who entered the top 21
and strut the runway. The song of choice can be a hit or miss. It was a no
surprise that Latinas did a great job here.
The likes of performances of Peru, India, Mexico, and Brazil are enough to save this segment.
Evening Gown
The evening gown
segment showcased the best of the top 10. All of the girls were given the
chance to walk their elegant gowns. The three who delivered the best
performances were : Thailand, Peru and Puerto Rico.
Question and Answer
The top 5
finalists are made of 4 Latinas and an Asian. In an honest side, the Q&A
round this year is not that strong. There were no remarkable statements which
we believe are our favorites. There are candidates who were not able to answer
the questions directly are there
candidates who delivered safe answers.
